A Message from BCBA President Barb Pope
Greetings fellow booksellers,
It has been a few months since our last newsletter but please be assured that your Board of Directors and your 2012 Education Day Planning Committee have not been idle.
February 2012 Education Day
Lee Trentadue, Chair of the Education Day Planning Committee, and her team have been working hard to bring you the best-ever Education Day at our February 2012 Spring Book Fair at the Laurel Point Inn in Victoria.
This Education Day is definitely not one you or your staff should miss! We have purposely kept our registration fee for the Day as low as we can. Your fee will include our costs for putting on the Day as well as lunch and coffee - what a bargain!
We are very excited that Oren Teicher, CEO of the American Booksellers Association, has accepted our invitation to come from New York to be our keynote speaker for the Day. Oren's message is not a pessimistic one! I believe he will give all of us who hear his address to our Canadian West Coast book industry - booksellers, reps, and publishers - a real shot in the arm with his richly informed and optimistic message for the future of independent bookselling. And don't we all need to hear that good news right now!
Working with our Industry Partners
Our Board continues to believe that by working together with all our industry partners, we can identify and find solutions to the challenges facing us all, and become a stronger community of BC independent booksellers.
To that end, BCBA has made excellent progress in forging ties with the Western Book Reps Association during the past few months. We'd like to thank Aydin Virani, WBRA President, and Iolanda Millar, both of whom have been amazing in their willingness to work with us in our Education Day planning.
Saturday Evening Booksellers' Dinner
We are pleased to invite you to our Booksellers' Dinner at Spinnakers Brew Pub in Victoria on Saturday evening, Feb. 11th at 6:30 pm. Seating is limited - RSVPs please. We would like to thank Login Brothers Canada and especially, Christoph Kapp, for their generous sponsorship of this evening. Don't miss this fun time to celebrate and cheer for our amazing community of B.C. booksellers.
Annual General Meeting
Our Annual General Meeting of BCBA will be held at 9:00 am on Sunday, February 12th, 2012 at the Laurel Point Inn. We will bring you up-to-date on Google's recent e-books settlement with Canadian campus bookstores and on lots of other related news. Please plan to attend and have your say about the issues you are concerned about.
The Agenda and nominations for President and Board of Directors will be sent out to you with our January newsletter. If you have any nominations or items for the Agenda, please contact me directly at mulberry@shawbiz.ca.
I know that "times are tough" for BC booksellers and that the costs of coming to our Education Day mean extra expenses. But we hope that by providing the extraordinary "WOW" factor to our program, you will be persuaded to join us. We promise you, you won't go home disappointed.
With my best wishes to you for your biggest Christmas sales ever and some time and energy left to enjoy the season.
Sincerely,
Barb Pope

books!
We're been busy planning the Education Day, but that doesn't mean we haven't been reading a much as we can. Here's what the members of your planning committee have been reading recently:
Angela from Phoenix on Bowen recommends Sister by Rosamund Lupton, which she calls a psychological mystery plus a lovely reflection on what it means to be a sister.
Cathy from Black Bond Books just read When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman and says it's on her all-time top ten book list.
Lee from Galiano Island Books is reading Half-Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan and Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese for her reading group and loving both.
Barb from the Mulberry Bush Bookstores recommends The Sisters from Handscrabble Bay by Beverly Jensen.
Trish from Cadboro Bay Books has been reading Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann, a look at a collection of lives that does make the world spin in love, grief and compassion and State of Wonder by Ann Patchett - a tale of love, fertility, and the Amazon, which she says is quite remarkable!
Mary-Ann from Blackberry Books just read Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks and recommends it for anyone who's loved her previous novels.
